Apple Acquires a German Reinforced Reality Company Specializing in Computer Vision

Apple acquired one of the old German companies specializing in computer vision to capitalize on its experience in virtual reality and enhanced reality.

German company SensoMotoric Instruments was founded in 1991 and developed an eye tracking technique used in glasses and virtual reality helmets.

Apple has been increasing its focus in the areas of virtual reality and enhanced both in the past few months and its support through the operating system and applications, which opens the door for the development of glasses like other companies.

In an earlier interview, CEO Tim Cook had expressed Apple’s interest in the enhanced reality, saying it would represent a quantum shift just like smartphones did.

Apple announced at the last developers’ conference an ARKit package to develop applications that would benefit from an iPhone camera and sensors for use in enhanced reality. The company reviewed several applications such as turning iPhone into a ruler to measure dimensions.
